Kariyachalli is one of 21 islands off India’s Tamil Nadu coast, and has already lost more than 80 percent of its landmass over the past 50 years due to coral mining, bleaching and rising sea levels. Scientists warn it could vanish entirely by 2036 without intervention. A local community is now working with marine researchers to restore seagrass and coral reefs, creating natural barriers to protect both the island and the coastal economy that depends on it.
